Rule Change Means Candidates Needn't Disclose Certain Memberships

Posted Jan. 7, 2018

A little-noticed rule change recently approved by the Colorado secretary of state inserted a gap in a law designed to expose conflicts of interest for top elected officials, The Denver Post reports.

Colorado’s Sunshine Law requires state lawmakers, statewide elected officials and candidates to list “all offices, directorships and fiduciary relationships” on a personal financial disclosure form. But in October Secretary of State Wayne Williams approved a caveat that allows candidates and elected officials to avoid disclosing memberships on boards or committees if they do not receive compensation or individually control how money is spent, according to The Post.

A Big Fine, And A Bar From Registering: Was It Reasonable?

Posted: Jan. 5, 2018

A government-affairs professional is hit with a five-figure fine and a bar from registering after working for a company that's registered in Colorado as a lobbying firm -- but failing to register as an individual lobbyist. Over multiple years.

Was the action fair? Harsh? Is the rule reasonable?

Members, sound off now in the "Rules of the Game"  discussion circle. Also, be sure to join the circle for future updates on this and other stories. (You must be signed in to access.)

Association Launches 'Find A Lobbyist' Directory

Posted: Jan. 4, 2018

CLA has launched its "Find A Lobbyist" directory, which makes it easier for corporations, associations and government agencies to search, sort and filter through the list of CLA members to find a great registered professional lobbyist.

This directory is searchable by first name, last name, organization and lobbying area. To optimize the results returned, CLA asks members to update their online profiles to include the following:

• Current clients: List all current clients you wish to include in the CLA Directory. Please do not abbreviate client names.
• Past clients: List all past clients you wish to include in the CLA Directory. Please do not abbreviate client names.
• Lobby areas: Select those areas in which you provide services.
• Lobbyist type: Please indicate.
• Website: Listing your website makes it easy to learn more about you and your firm.

The "Find A Lobbyist" directory includes only those lobbyists accepting new clients. If you're not accepting clients and you don't want to be listed in "Find A Lobbyist", please go to your profile and check "No" to that question. If you are accepting clients and want to be listed, check "Yes."

Also, you should personalize your listing by uploading a current photo!
